With a few exceptions, most Canadians seem to agree that while a tariff war with the United States is far from ideal, the only sensible way to respond to bad-faith bargaining by the Trump Administration in the United States is with dollar-for-dollar reciprocal tariffs, targeted to hit Americans where they’ll feel it.

The rare exceptions mainly seem to include treason-adjacent Alberta separatists, including some who hold seats in Parliament and the Legislature, and Conservatives elected to provincial and federal office in Wild Rose Country who may not be MAGA-influenced Fifty-first Staters but lack the intestinal fortitude to speak up on behalf of their country.
Plus, of course, there’s that one weirdo MP from Ontario who was apparently U.S. Vice-President JD Vance’s BFF in college.
Other than those guys – and I say this as a lifelong New Democrat – no one speaks for Canadians at this fraught moment better than Ontario’s Conservative Premier, Doug Ford, who said of President Donald Trump, “I have a lot of real estate on my ass, so he has a lot of room to kiss my ass.”
Mr. Trump, no stranger to having his own sizeable posterior kissed, responded by suggesting he would rename Lake Ontario, taking to his personal Pravda social media site to declare: “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Thanks to the simpering toadies at Google, Mr. Trump has enjoyed some success with his effort last year to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Golfo de América, or words to that effect. One supposes, therefore, that this is an actual possibility.

This raises an interesting question for Canadians: How do we respond, appropriately and proportionally, with a symbolic gesture that will get up President Trump’s sensitive nose without directly insulting the United States?
I have a solution. It’s time to rename the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Vancouver Island and Washington State The Canadian Channel.
Full disclosure here, I grew up in a house where you could see the Juan de Fuca Strait from one window, that of a tiny bathroom on the second floor.
The appropriate person to consult about the naming of geographical features and outdoor signage is always a 13-year-old boy. Since I was about 13, I have been vividly aware that Juan de Fuca is not an appropriate name for a large body of salt water, or for that matter anything, anywhere in the English-speaking world.
For just one thing, almost nobody in these parts knows how to pronounce Juan, after the probably undeserving Greek navigator, Juan de Fuca (né Ioannis Fokas, which is even worse) who probably never even saw the passage, let alone sailed up it.

Anyway, while a strait is generally thought of in maritime circles as being skinnier than a channel, both terms are vague about just how narrow the passage in question must be. So we sovereign Canadians can just name the Strait of Juan de Fuca the Canadian Channel if we bloody well want to. And if Mr. Trump proceeds with Lake America, we should.
As Mr. Trump did south of the longest previously undefended border in the world, we can order all Canadian departments and agencies to call it the Canadian Channel all the way from the open Pacific to the Salish Sea. What’s more, we can ask our European and Antipodean allies to do the same thing. And you can count on it, Dear Readers, that at this point they will do so with alacrity, even delight!
If Mr. Trump confuses this as for something to do with Canadian content rules for broadcasters, well, so much the better.

When the dispute with the United States simmers down and, as the Scots put it, we’ve sent Mr. Trump homeward tae think again – with any luck, immediately after the U.S. mid-term elections in November – the name of the Canadian Channel should remain.
It can be a reminder of our historical ties to the brave mariners who in the summer of 1588 rallied to their queen and drove away vastly larger ships of the Spanish Armada in the aptly named English Channel – the venerable and dignified name recognized to this day not only by the Spanish and the French, but even by the Russians!
It will also be a lesson to future American presidents that, sooner or later, those who come to Canada to Fuca ’round, find out.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Actually, I was thinking renaming every body of water “Trump” as in Trump Lake, Trump River, Trump pond etc.
of course it’s not very useful, but, what the hell???
it’s just as dumb
There is a Trump Lake in Ontario, Laz. I suppose it could be changed to Canada Lake. But it’s not much of an attraction. Hardly a tat worthy of the tit. DJC
How about Lake Mead and Lake Powell as respectively, Upper and Lower Trump Lakes?

Snort! Well-played.
Oh dear, you really veered off the strait and narrow this time. Going to need ‘une capote anglaise’ on that one.
Sure, La Manche used to be La Mer Brittanique but I’m not sure you can say the French have ever accepted defeat in any way shape or form!
La Manche, I believe, still has some currency. But, you know, devalued. DJC
The second last line in your blog is brilliant – and hilarious! Thank you.
Good sense of humor. Aside from that, and on a very serious note, I wonder if Donald Trump will survive the mid term? He is doing an immense amount of harm. Danielle Smith wants to appease him, because she isn’t supporting Team Canada. Meanwhile, former premiers of Alberta, Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley have joined forces to oppose Alberta separation, because they know the damage it will cause. Danielle Smith sure has caused a lot of problems. Jason Kenney did too, but Danielle Smith appears to be even worse. This is what people get when they don’t think before they vote. Unfortunately, many people have to endure the bad consequences, with great difficulty.
And Redford & Stelmach too; and surely in spirit, Lougheed as well.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Doug Ford as Prime Minister so Canadians can proudly boast we elected a former hash dealer. Legend has it Doug and his brother Rob were slinging the stuff late at night in a park close to their home. They must have had some smarts, avoiding the long arm of the law, a skill that has served them well later in life.
Good one!
I had a vision of Doug Ford rising up out of Lake Ontario in alligator skin, resembling Godzilla, vanquishing the demon Trump. It looked like Japanese kabuki. I assigned it to AI, in order to purge it from my dreams. It was a bit of work to get rid of the extra limbs that were coming out of his real estate, probably due to his famous quote. This is what happens when you watch the news before bed. Now I’m going back to sleep.
For some time now I’ve been calling Lake Michigan, Lake Buttertart and the North American continent, the Poutine continent and obviously will continue to do so. Oh yeah, how could I forget, Mount Washington is Mount Eh.
I was thinking we could attach the moniker ‘Mount Donald Trump’ to the highest point in a landfill.
But Bob, who would want to mount Donald Trump. Other than Natalie Harp, of course. DJC
What was it Gavin Newsome said? “He’s a T-Rex, Trump. But he’s a guy who does one of two things. You either mate with him — forgive me — or he devours you.”

At 5:00.
I noticed a small typo in paragraph 4, it says “as a lifelog New Democrat”, perhaps an n is missing? “lifelong”?
I enjoyed Doug Ford’s berating of Trump with the ass kissing and such and it what I see was exactly what was needed. I am somewhat disappointed he toned it down the yesterday.
Thanks, OA, it’s been fixed. DJC
David, straight from the heart, just as Premier Ford talks to Trump from another appropriate part. In honour of this “President” I have re-signed our long since abandoned out house, that I suppose we keep for “posterity’s” sake at the summer cottage: TRUMP DUMP.
In this timeline, one has to put up with the toddlers in the Trump Administration, who can’t seem to walk and not lie at the same time. But I suspect a fight with Canada is a weird distraction from all the stupid that Trump caused in the Strait of Hormuz. Pick a fight with Canada because that’ll show them. Sec. of Stupid Wars, Kegseth, takes a break from his drinking and T levels, and decides that airstrikes on Canada will solve everything. Bomb what? American will be able to see it happen.and realize they’ve taken by another grifter. Meanwhile in Alberta, the crazy is getting to be fantastic. Kenney and Notley working together? These are surely the End Times.
It’s all over when a Ford is the good guy. Other commenters have compared this to the Iran fiasco, and there are parallels. The US will continue to periodically assault Iran to the extent of their capacity to do so, because the fundamentally corrupt US MIC can no longer fight a sustained war. The policy existed long before Drumpf, and will continue when he is gone. He and his scumbag cronies will make bank on the rise and fall of markets that results from the stop-start attacks, and like their 14-year-attack on Syria will just carry on. Their “trade war” with Canada is going to follow a similar trajectory. The US has long-term policies and plans for Canada and they started long before Drumpf and will continue after he is dead. The hot war with China is coming and the Carny Banker will in no way shirk from putting the resources of the Canadian state at the disposal of the Anglo bankers. If next-level craziness ensues in Derpberta as a function of the hegemonic program, so be it.
I always considered Doug Ford to be one of the Reform Party crowd because of the way he treated his people and was obviously friendly with the Reformers, yet I may have been wrong. Unlike Danielle Smith, Scott Moe and Pierre Poilievre he is showing that he’s a lot more Canadian than they are.
As a YouTube pundit put it:
Call it “The Strait of OurMoose”
When Camosun College was founded, they briefly considered calling it Juan de Fuca University. When someone realized what the institution would be called, they quickly changed the name to Camosun College. Maybe we should re-use that name, it’s certainly better than dire straits. We could draft a communique?
Gar: The suggestion, as I recall, was that they would call it Juan de Fuca U. You must be almost as old as I am to remember that. DJC
The world must be delighted with how we are giving this jerk a lesson. Yes it will be hard for us but that is what it means to love your country, sometimes sacrifices are needed. Canada deserves it and so united, we can get this bully in its proper cage.
I totally approve of Ford reaction. Being too subservient is a Canadian characteristic and should not be. Other than our idiots in Alberta, including this despicable premier, Canadians are ready for winning this fight. My support to Mark Carney is 1000% and with a notice – Push the pedal to the metal. Call our idiot premier and tell her what it means not to be a traitor. She can pack her bags and move to Mar-a-Lago where she feels at home. What a disgraceful person.
We should definitely use our oil and gas as an economic weapon. Why not? Only because our premier is a separatist? Well she can really separate by moving to the US. GOOD RIDANCE. It would be our great Alberta Day celebration.
Kyle Campbell is the NDP candidate in the Alberta NDP, the by-election for Calgary-Shaw.
The election is September 14, 2026.

If you can donate, do so.
If not, please spread the word.
How long will it be before some AI genius decides to picture Marmalade Man puckering up to Ford’s self-described voluminous buttocks?
Rumor has it hat Doug Ford wishes to rename lake Michigan; Lake Epstien!

Hello DJC and fellow commenters,
Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley working together to encourage Alberta to stay in Canada? An unexpected combination to be sure, but good for them. However, how can I say this delicately? Actually, I cannot. Hell must have frozen over.
Heh, some pretty decent groaners today. Must be that first harvest of Northern Bud—or is it Northern Bud Lite?—er, uh, Northern Lights Bud?
Uhhhhhh…(Dang, I fergit!)
Anyway, Free Canada, Trade Danielle! Yo!
I heartily agree. As I look out my 8th-floor window I can see the Canadian Channel in all its glory and thankfully I can’t see the shores of the USA because the Washington Forest Fire Smoke and the Marine Layer have combined to make a wall of blue/white!!!!
Coming late to the comments, I have but one thing to add. How about renaming Lake Erie Lake Canada? It’s upstream of Lake Ontario, and any effluvia generated in the renaming will wash downstream.
