Like her hero Donald Trump, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has always understood that populist movements like her United Conservative Party are based more on tribal identity than serious policy.

Ms. Smith, caught flatfooted, tries to argue with her interlocutor, not particularly successfully from what little can be heard on the video (Screenshot of Instagram video/@mikaylaresists).

Indeed, from the UCP’s breakup of Alberta Health Services in revenge for enforcing public health policy during the pandemic, to its decision to interfere in municipal government to eliminate bike lanes, to its coyly racist anti-immigration referenda, to its attack on that tiniest of minorities, trans kids, no government in this province’s history has shown it is less serious about public policy.

These fascist tropes – and I use that particular F-word advisedly – are all about reinforcing identity and solidarity among the UCP’s always restive MAGA base, lest it turns on the premier.

This is not to say that unserious UCP policies are not dangerous. No policy could be less serious or more dangerous than Ms. Smith’s sly enabling of Alberta separatism as a mechanism to shore up the UCP as standard bearer of her party’s angry base of convoy-adjacent conspiracy cultists while maintaining enough deniability to keep sufficient numbers of inattentive traditional conservatives on side come voting day.

Since the Alberta NDP has essentially morphed into a progressive conservative party under Rachel Notley and Naheed Nenshi, Ms. Smith and her closest advisors have also turned to Red baiting that echoes U.S. President Trump’s increasingly desperate efforts to label his Democrat opposition as Communists. As in the United States, there is essentially no organized political Left in Alberta. So, one supposes, this dishonest tactic can be effective for low-information voters who have no real socialist party to compare to the Alberta NDP. And that includes the soft environmentalists of the federal NDP under Avi Lewis, by the way, notwithstanding the UCP’s repeated efforts to cast Mr. Lewis as Mr. Nenshi’s “boss.”

Nevertheless, sometimes long spells of misrule like that Alberta has been experiencing under the UCP have a way of suddenly becoming obvious to all, prompted by a memetic moment.

Meme-maker Mikayla (Photo: Instagram/@mikaylaresists).

Every educated person knows that it was a question directed 72 years ago at U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy“Have you no sense of decency?” – that was the beginning of the end of that generation’s anti-communist witch hunts in the United States. This is true even if we don’t recall it was uttered by U.S. Army chief counsel Joseph Welch or realize that there is a straight line through history running from Red-baiting Senator McCarthy to his chief legal counsel, the late Roy Cohn, to Cohn’s client and confidante Donald Trump.

But if you’ve been waiting for a moment when a respectable American or Albertan would utter a memorable phrase around which an increasingly angry but still-paralytic opposition majority appalled by the MAGA manifestation in public policy could rally, we have not yet seen it on either side of the U.S.-Canadian border.

Or have we?

Thursday morning at the “Premier’s K-Days Breakfast” on the south lawn of the Alberta Legislature, a young woman confronted the premier with a number of complaints about the UCP’s maladministration, among them the government’s pro-separation policies and its assault on trans kids. (K Days, once known as Klondike Days, is Edmonton’s lame imitation of the Calgary Stampede, whence comes the apparently culturally important tradition of serving partly cooked flapjacks and cold bacon to all comers one day a year.)

“You’re a separatist! You’re a fucking separatist,” she cried out in a video-recorded encounter with the premier. “You don’t care about us! You only care about selling us out for money!”

NDP Member of Parliament Heather McPherson takes a sip from what appears to be an FYFP coffee cup – this will undoubtedly send the sensitive little snowflakes of the Wild Rose MAGAverse right over the edge (Photo: Instagram/@heathermacnow).

Notwithstanding the profanity – which thanks to Mr. Trump, his ambassador to Canada, and the Alberta pickup truck brigade with their ubiquitous black flags, is now a normal part of Canadian political discourse – who can argue with her conclusion?

Yes, she is a person with a presence on social media of the sort the well-funded political right would disdainfully dismiss as that of an activist or a community organizer. And, yes, she has an Instagram account – found @mikaylaresists. The video was probably recorded by someone who agreed with her. But so what? Committed people have a right in a free society to make their grievances known in public too. To hear her is to know her outburst came from the heart.

As she was dragged away by a couple of the premier’s security officers, she memorably shouted over her shoulder: “Fuck your fascist pancakes!” (Hereafter abbreviated as FYFP.)

It resonated. By gosh, it resonated!

The response from the UCP corner, naturally, was immediate. People who have no problem with F-Trudeau and F-Carney banners flapping their way past schoolyards or goons unoriginally screeching “Lock ’er Up” about Rachel Notley were suddenly afflicted by the vapours.

Ms. Smith’s chief of staff, Rob Anderson, at a union protest in 2013 – that’s former AUPE President Guy Smith’s gloved hand on his shoulder, I kid you not (Photo: David J. Climenhaga).

Rob Anderson, the Premier’s chief of staff, who on the open sewer formerly known as Twitter has become one of Alberta’s most obnoxious pubic figures, adopted a tone of faux sympathy and righteous Red-baiting. “Mentally unsound woman brainwashed with unintelligible leftist propaganda,” Mr. Anderson thumb-typed. “Hope she’s able to get the help she needs.”

“Danielle has to put up with this kind of garbage almost every day,” his post continued. “I don’t know how she does it – especially with class.” Actually, it would seem more likely she does it with aggressive security. But if she’s going to continue her efforts to destroy our country, she’ll need to get used to people asking her uncomfortable questions at public gatherings, and yelling at her when they get the bum’s rush.

Regardless, there was something about that young woman’s emotional – but hardly mentally unsound – outburst that has the quality of a have-you-no-sense-of decency moment. She hit a chord – at once discordant and harmonic!

It’s not just me. Within hours, the Internet was awash with offers from entrepreneurial Albertans promoting FYFP t-shirts and FYFP coffee mugs. No doubt there will soon be some FYFP bumper stickers, and maybe even pickup truck flags, spelled out or merely initialized, to suit a variety of tastes in free speech.

A FYFP t-shirt or an AI generated prototype of one – I’m not sure (Photo: Facebook/TheBreakdown).

There’s just something about FYFP that so perfectly encapsulates the current state of political affairs in Alberta that to hear it is to fully get it.

Perhaps this, and of course their Victorian sensibility about strong words, is why almost no one from the few remaining legitimate media operations still employing Alberta reporters has bothered to report it. CTV News posted a video clip on social media.

It may have been rude, dear readers, it may have been emotional, but it sure feels good to be able to express a mood felt by increasing numbers of Albertans in a memorable phrase, or merely by typing out four letters.

What do you want to bet the UCP cancels the venerable pancake breakfast next year and ever after, or restricts it to party members, vetted, scanned, patted down and paid up in full.

FYFP!

  1. On July 24, from 5-7 p.m., in Medicine Hat, UCP cronies Danielle and Justin will be hosting a free Stampede Barbeque for the public.

Just across the way, citizens can opt to enjoy a free Democracy Dog and a cold drink to be offered by a local advocacy group as an alternative to the fascist fare.

    1. Does this mean that fresh strawberries and whipped cream should be the topping used to that mine are ‘Forever Canada’ pancakes?

  2. Well- done, Mikayla!! My pancake on the stack reads: “sold our water, quality and quantity, out for the Ozzie coal miner bestie b*TCH!”

  3. I think I’ll buy a shirt. LOL. I attended the parade in Longview yesterday and I was disappointed that they allowed a separatist float to participate. I fully understand, that everyone has a right to their opinion, I just found it to be disappointing.

    1. @Jones how were they received in the parade is the big question?
I wouldn’t be surprised that they were heroes to these mindless seniors who are apparently too stupid to understand what separation will do to them, as we have learned.

      1. There were separatist groupies in the crowd. I’d say they ranged from 30ish yrs old to their 50s. But you’re right, the people on the float were grey-hairs. They were handing out their free signs and spewing the same old rhetoric of how wonderful Alberta would be if it left Canada.

  4. When 6 of us true Conservative seniors created Seniors United Now, SUN, in 2003, we hadn’t realized how stupid many of our fellow seniors were. They saw nothing wrong with what Klein was doing to us and weren’t interested in learning the truth. Other seniors we have talked to since know exactly what we experienced they have experienced it also. There are a lot of really stupid seniors in the province and they’re the ones keeping these Reformers in power.
We got called liars, traitors, communists, left wing nuts, closeted liberals, or socialist and everyone who did the name calling was a mindless senior too stupid to understand what we were trying to tell them, and they didn’t care. We found that young Albertans were far more interested in listening to us and believing what we were saying. We made perfect sense to them.
You can bet these Reformers don’t give a damn about what they are doing to our children’s future and they don’t care, do they ?

  5. Dani’s getting the band back together. They’re called the Unsound Crappy Pancakes. F*** Your Fascist Pancakes, Dani. And take your Pinocchio Parade Crotch Candy with you.

  6. Danielle Smith should avoid wearing garments emblazoned with the capital letter “K” and pancakes at future events. In the hot sun, it looks like “KKK pancakes”. “Fascist pancakes” is more polite.

Did any of the poors ask for more? Did they get a spanking?

  7. 2 Questions: 1. Does anyone know where I can get some of these FYFP coffee mugs? 2. When was freedom of expression deleted from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? As an aside, someone has to come up with lawn signs for this.

  8. The over the top reaction from Free Alberta Rob and others is hilarious. One young woman accosts the premier in public about the idiocy of UCP policy and they go full ‘Masculine Overcompensation.’ (It’s a thesis. Look it up.) I had a good laugh at a YouTube vlogger who posted a video of himself with biceps bulging telling his viewers to bring it on. What’s he so afraid of that he has to try to prove he’s a big tough guy? Does he think hordes of young leftist women are going to attack him the moment he walks out of his house? In his dreams. Or is he worried about his former separatist buddies who are furious that he’s defending Danielle and her dumb essay question? Maybe he should have thought of the consequences of grifting off separatism BEFORE he started posting rabidly divisive content on social media and selling merch. FYFP! I think I’d like the mug.

  9. Rob Anderson will one day be getting the mental health he certainly needs. What is more concerning is that we no longer have anything close to a serious alternative in Alberta, so this province may not physically or politically separate from Canada but it is now captured for good in this MAGA mental disease.

    1. There’s nothing even “close to a serious alternative in Alberta,”—to what?—Ron Anderson? Thank goodness for that!

But if you’re talking about a serious alternative to the UCP government, I remind that since it’s seriously the worst government Alberta ever had, and that since 2015 the NDP has been the seriously perennial contender for power ( governing for four laudable years, defeated in 2019 but with six times as many seats as it had held for over a quarter century prior, adding 15 seats to become the largest Opposition in Alberta history with 38 seats in 2023 when, but for a few thousand votes in a handful of ridings in Calgary where NDP leader Nenshi was a popular Mayor before entering provincial politics, would have won the election, and gaining on the UCP in recent polls), it should be logically, significantly, and substantially closer to a serious alternative than you seem to suggest. How could it not be?

Donald F tRump’s most obsequious Canadian sickofanatic has less chance of labelling her New Democrat contenders “communists” than he does his Democrat rivals because the NDP proved to be as conservative as Premier Lougheed’s ProgCons. The Dippers proved fairly consistent in policy when it became only the third party to govern Alberta since 1935. One might speculate that had Premier Notley won incumbencies, her NDP would have eventually made some bad decisions, but since the only available evidence of what her party actually did is of remarkably good governance during a serious market slump in petroleum prices (upon which the provincial government is as revenue dependant as Russia is on its own petro-industry), it can only be speculative by way of the weakest inference. All we know of the NDP is good—excepting, perhaps, that it did not win the 2023 election when it came so very close.

Nenshi is not inconsistent with his predecessor’s policies, except perhaps that he proffered changing the party name—but only to blunt UCP accusations that the federal party calls the shots for provincial NDP parties ( it was never true, as voters in the other three Western provinces already know because of their greater familiarity with NDP governments); it was Nenshi’s way of reminding federal dippers that they better blunt their own “leave-it-in-the-ground” rhetoric when it comes to Alberta (or any other jurisdiction that develops petroleum where the NDP is a viable contender for power—Yukon, NWT, BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia, &c). That bow-shot fired, his experienced caucus is comfortable propagating stock NDP positions on healthcare, schooling, social justice, &c, signifying that the party is unified behind Nenshi whereas the UCP is deeply divided between two shotgun-wedded factions, the one which got Smith elected leader even waffling on its support for her. And while the UCP wrestles with names (as in, what rival parties may call themselves), the NDP remains The New Democratic Party of Alberta.

A case can be made that Albertans are struggling with finding alternative governing parties of the right, evident in 1971 when three and a half decades of Socred rule was terminated by Lougheed’s ProgCons. It governed with a steady hand until Ralph Klein’s populist politics mythologized the 1980 National Energy Program to scapegoat Ottawa for his own government’s many shortcomings (in fact, Lougheed and Trudeau père solved their differences politically years before the NEP was rescinded in 1985). Trouble in petro-paradise ensued when Klein’s successors tried to recuperate the progressiveness he’d assiduously spurned by way of historical revision. Their effort germinated the reactionary Wildrose party, as indoctrinated to Klein’s Ottawa-bashing as Bible Bill Aberhart was to holy scripture.

Danielle Smith’s great accomplishment was to win 17 seats for Wildrose in her first provincial contest in 2012, making her leader of the Opposition. The party started seriously mainlining peeve because polls forecast that she’d be elected premier—but for a rookie mistake she made on campaign that allowed the PCs to hang on for one more term. As gormless as she’s become famous for since, she crossed the floor to the troubled ProgCon caucus in 2014 with her shadow cabinet in tow which—talk about “trouble”—ultimately destroyed both parties (voters abandoned Wildrose, just as she had, while also punishing the PCs for accepting them into their caucus).

Granted, the 2015 NDP upset was by default when outraged Albertans voted in protest against both parties of the right. But Notley’s administration was as good as any pro-pipeline party could be—indeed, so far it’s the only party that got a new pipeline to the West Coast, a fact Danielle Smith has never acknowledged even as she accused Ottawa of blocking such pipelines.

Given all this, there is nothing to suggest the NDP is not a serious alternative to the UCP, based on anything the party has done or achieved since 2015—unless, of course, you mean some sort of distinction between the old leader and the new.

Hmmm…now what could that be if not policy? Gender, perhaps? Doesn’t seem likely since Alberta has had three women premiers so far, and plenty of male ones too. The NDP has basically proved a pro-pipeline, progressive Conservative Party and remained much the same ever since, so what could possibly make Nenshi distinct in any kind of way that would disqualify the NDP as serious alternative to the UCP?

Don’t stomp your foot while thinking of an answer—just in case you’re on thin ice.

  10. Mentally unsound “Bishop” brainwashed with unintelligible LDS propaganda – Rob Anderson

    1. Canadianglen: I don’t believe he’s affiliated with the church any more. Jack Anderson, perhaps. DJC

  11. Many laffs over the Maple neocon McPhersson’s Mac-Pap cosplay. The one-time member of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association knows a thing or two about fascism. Funny thing about “conspiracies”. They are literally everywhere. In my lifetime the first biggie was the lying about the bombing of Cambodia, followed up in short order by Watergate. Iran-Contra was pretty good, Mulroney grift-o-ramas, etc. But I’m always partial to the Strategy of Tension and Gladio during the Years of Lead when fake leftist terror attacks were committed by Italian intelligence personnel trained by the British and Americans as a function of NATO. Curiously, when the bona fide Italian fascist agents began singing in the early nineties, it became painfully clear that dozens upon dozens of people got blowed up real good and shot to pieces in furtherance of NATO policy. But maybe the BBC is in league with the yokel truckers. Operation Gladio-BBC Timewatch. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yXavNe81XdQ&t=6066s&pp=2AGyL5ACAQ%3D%3D&ra=m

    1. McPherson is my MP, I’ve met her several times and while she is not perfect she is most definitely not a fascist, far from it. Your incessant rambling is usually bizarre and tolerated here but this time has almost crossed a line into pure slander and the fact our host published this is surprising. BTW, not every post has to drift into Murphy’s Hidden World History Lesson just to prove your the only one who “gets it”. Give it a rest!

  12. And are they daring to serve real Canadian maple syrup on these fascist flapjacks, or is it American Republocrat corn syrup?

    1. Tom: You’ve been around too long not to know the answer. Maple syrup on the top floor of the former Federal Building; corn syrup for the rest of us. DJC

  13. Hello DJC and fellow commenters,
As my mother’s friends would delicately say, when I was a kid, when they were talking about a particularly awful person, the person was a Sugar On the Board. (Not sure if you can print this or not.)

    1. Christina: Yes, I can print SOB. Now, for your amusement, here’s what Google’s “AI” had to say about the phrase “Sugar On the Board” …

Because “sugar on the board” is a broad phrase, its meaning depends entirely on the context. You are likely referring to one of the following:

The Educational Initiative (India): Educational boards like the CBSE mandate that schools display a “Sugar Board” in classrooms to educate children about the hidden sugar in everyday foods.

The Charcuterie Trend: A “Sugar Board” (or candy/dessert board) is a popular, aesthetically arranged grazing platter loaded with sweets, candies, and chocolates.

Corporate or Government Boards: There are several prominent business executives named Sugar who serve on prominent boards, such as Alan Sugar of The Apprentice, and Ronald Sugar, who serves on the boards of Uber and Apple. Additionally, agricultural entities like the Kenya Sugar Board or Rogers Sugar oversee the sugar industry.Could you tell me which of these topics you are interested in?

Can’t make this stuff up! DJC

  14. Yes, Smith has quite a balancing act to try keep more traditional conservatives and the more extreme separatists together in one big tent. Perhaps this is made easier in the polarized current state of Alberta politics, where there is no where else viable for either while still having some power. Although importantly, just because they feel they do not have anywhere else better to go does not mean they are really very happy.

I do feel that in this era of memes and video clips, FYFP could have some legs. It does capture the frustration with our glib, game playing Premier who is now rolling the political dice with our country. So it’s going to be fun, or tricky, explaining those bumper stickers that may pop up to some.

Of course this resonates on the left, but it may also surprisingly with some of Smith’s Stockholm syndrome, above mentioned, political hostages who are also frustrated.

Smith is about keeping up appearances, so I expect there likely will be a pancake breakfast next year. Although security will probably be much, much tighter so she will be better able to avoid the frustrated public.

  15. Playing the game properly means that one can continue to freely and falsely accuse a vocal opposition of being “communists”, or one can, for example, also accuse vaccinated individuals of being Nazi sympathizers. In Alberta, in very special cases certain individuals can be both a Nazi sympathizer and a communist at the same time. Doublethink and duplicity are necessary traits for any successful actor on the Alberta political stage performing for the audience of the gullible. However,

““That’s why I vowed when I was elected that we were going to put this in the past, that we were going to look forward, that we were going to make sure this was a place that everybody from every walk of life felt valued and respected and optimistic for the future,” Smith said.”

Everybody except of course for all those individuals that do not and will not “adapt to our rules and our (conservative) [values, beliefs,] and voting patterns”. Or anyone causing a ‘disturbance’ (i.e., asking questions and trying to have a discussion) and ruining the ‘fun’ at the annual political pancake festival . All those individuals are collectively persona non grata, will be made to not feel welcome, and must leave immediately. Forcefully if need be, in some cases, it seems.

Noting that the current premier has been carefully chosen and groomed for her role as factotum and the political representative for leveraging influence and advancing the interests of economically privileged and powerful individuals in the Province of Alberta. That is, ““I had to take Danielle Smith to sovereign wealth funds around the world,” said O’Leary. “ I had to take her to Washington and I took her to Mar-a-Lago. We had to go convince people that Canada is open for business again, at least Alberta is. Cause no one believes it.””

That is why, for example, “She also declined to answer why she was allowed to stay on as a UCP candidate while the party barred Nadine Wellwood, a candidate running in Livingstone-Macleod late last year, for making similar comments (i.e., “the vaccinated are Nazi sympathizers”).”

  16. Basically, if Danielle Smith can’t stand the heat, she should stay out of the kitchen. Criticism for her and the UCP is very well deserved, because they are not helping Albertans.

  17. “I’ve been all too aware that in many nations of the world it is against the law to speak truth to power. It can be dangerous. Sadly, in the last year I’ve noticed there are times where it has become perilous here too.”

Danielle Smith said that in 2021. Now she is the one making it perilous to speak truth to power. Just wait until fully-armed Alberta Sheriffs are at her beck and call everywhere in the province. Who would dare question Dear Leader then?

This never happened to the little boy in The Emperor’s New Clothes. In that story about vanity and deceit, the folks hired by the emperor called the subjects stupid fools for not going along with their lies. Alas for today’s Anderson, name-calling won’t work this time. Threats of spankings by the courtiers won’t work either. A truth-teller has called out the lies and deception. The Emperor’s subjects have taken note. The Emperor has no clothes. The lies and deception are unravelling like invisible golden threads. All we want to know is if the premier was wearing her usual food service uniform of bare feet and sandals.

    https://globalnews.ca/news/7568250/danielle-smith-departure-corus-radio/

    1. The current Alberta premier that acts as the agent and the voice for the powerful and the privileged in society deliberately and predictably left out the most important parts:

      1. “The powerful typically know the truth quite well. They generally know what they are doing, and don’t need our instructions. They also will not benefit from moral lessons, not because they are necessarily bad people, but because they play a certain institutional role, and if they abandon that role, somebody else will fill it as long as the institutions persist. There is no point instructing CEOs of the fossil fuel industry that their activities are damaging communities and destroying the environment and our climate. They’ve known that for a long time. They also know that if they depart from dedication to profit and concern themselves with the human impact of what they are doing, they’ll be out on the streets and someone will replace them to carry out the institutionally required tasks.”

      2. “The task of anyone who wants to uphold intellectual and moral values is not to speak what they regard as truth to anybody — the powerful or the powerless — but rather to speak with the powerless and to try to learn the truth.”

      3. As a defense mechanism, powerful structures and their acting representatives capture threatening dissident ideas and words immediately; which, are then categorized and translated, meaning that there is no effective mechanism of listening to and understanding any ideas not aligning with the confirmation biases of the powerful: truth telling in hierarchical power laden social structures is most often filtered and dismissed. Everything is interpreted and reshaped through the lenses of the dominant culture and its ideology; therefore, the institutional structures that are preventing the ability to actually listen to the powerless need to be dismantled.

  18. The separation THING is just a smoke screen for CONSTRUCTING AI DATA CENTERS ACROSS THE PROVINCE, FOLLOW THE MONEY HOW MUCH IS GOING TO UCP?????

  19. In solidarity with my Alberta comrades, I had Anti-Fascist Pancakes for breakfast today, topped with bright red sour cherry jam and fresh raspberries.

  20. Returning to the top of your essay/article, can you or any of your readers please explain to me when and why the US reversed the colours red and blue in the world of their political identities?

In the late forties through to the seventies, the colour red was always associated with “red scare” or “red menace” and so on.

So when did the Democrats become blue and the Republicans red, and why? Thanks.

    1. YYCC: “The Republican Party officially adopted red as its color during the controversial 2000 presidential election. Because the Florida recount delayed the results for weeks, Americans stared at the same color-coded map for over a month, solidifying the association of red with the Republican Party.” Explanation courtesy Google AI.

  21. thanks for the FYFP mug link, $45 with all expenses included, worth every smile I’ll get every morning sipping on a coffee getting bolted down, ready for another day of Danielle Smith.

  22. Were any charges laid against this lady? The picture appears to show a physical assault.
Maybe Mini Maga North is on a path to ICE inspired thuggery.

  23. It sure does resonate! It was the perfect response to Danielle’s, ‘Let Them Eat Cake’, performance.

  24. I am increasingly confused in my old age. Does the FYFP movement have anything to do with the Waffle?

If we could all just concentrate here and try to focus on what really matters.
I’ve been trying for weeks to apply for Danielle’s two-bit energy rebate. ATB Financial (69682745–01, in case anybody is wondering. Don’t worry, it’s empty — and likely to stay that way, thanks to D. Smith and J. Nixon.) is not on THE LIST.
In fact, it’s not anywhere. Thanks to Saturday’s UCP cyclone. (BTW, if anyone has seen my cows, please give me a dingle. My cattle just up and left.)

As the Finance Minister tells me, I have to submit something called a “selfie”. For that, you need a gadget called a smart phone.
I grew up without a smart phone, so why, heading into my final weeks, would I need one now? D. S. just gave me her answer.
By definition, no one but me can take a selfie of yours truly, so my younger neighbors are no help.
My Kodak Instamatic X-15 has a self-timer button, but in my rush to get in front of the camera (at my age, eight seconds is not a long time to move 10 feet), I tripped over the phone cord.

Now I’m laid up with a sprained ankle in what used to be Rocky Hospital, before the roof flew off into the wild yonder. (UCP destructuring.)
And a separated right shoulder, to boot. Jeffrey (U.S. spelling) Wrath (Alberta spelling) will tell you separation is quick and painless. I’m here to tell you, it ain’t.

Nothing much to do. The rental TV doesn’t work. $100 a week, they wanted. Where am I to get $100?
Well, to start with, you need a bank, Internet access, a verified account, and a smart phone.
As the Finance Minister boasts, “From July 1 to July 9, these safeguards helped us block about 35,000 potential fraud requests.” And about 350,000 legitimate requests.
Nice gal at ATB — from somewhere in cyberspace — verified my bank account over the phone. She also verified I was overdrawn. She also verified the bank’s $100 NSF charge.
    So helpful.

Ask seniors to jump through hoops for $100, and suddenly the hospital wards are full. See any connection?
Guy in the next bed doesn’t say much. The quiet, brooding type. Typical conservative voter. He passed in 2006 — the staff still haven’t got around to shifting him. Alberta’s health-care system for you. No moolah, no doulah. His family comes by once a month to roll him over to prevent bedsores. Last thing he did on this earth was cash in — his Ralph Bucks.
Speaking of moolahs, has anyone seen my cows? Or my dog, Toto?
Now I see why I need a smart phone. You can’t trip over a smart phone. You just trip over everything else while staring at your smart phone!

Needless to say, this puts a dent in my rodeo career. No cows, no steer wrestling. And my lassoing arm is busted. I can only spur my horse with my left foot, so it goes in endless circles to the right, no matter how much I squawk and holler.
A lot like the UCP government.

Anyway, must run. Breakfast menu just arrived. Fascist pancakes or socialist waffles. Lovingly prepared in an industrial kitchen in Trois-Rivières, QB, in 2006. Someone comes in once a month to flip them.
Vintage year for maple syrup. Fair is fair. Alberta sends Québec our equalization dollars, and they ship us their maple syrup. (D. Smith is loading up train cars with cash as we speak. Including the $100 I am destined never to receive.)
Pipelines are the safest way to ship maple syrup.
You see? I’ve got my fascist pancake talking points down flat.
    No brain power required.

  25. I am very happy to have been present for the historic flapjack fumble. Ms. Smith’s handlers were quite anxious after all the fun to discretely shoo us and our Water Not Coal slogans out of the vicinity. After that charming breakfast event, I went on to menace Devin Dreeshen and Miles Berry by riding my bicycle in circles up and down 50th street. Funny how it’s the women asking for luxuries like smoke free air, water minus the heavy metals, safe streets and non-fascist pancakes are the ones having their mental health questioned. Funny until you remember the Compassionate Intervention Act.
I like to think that I was part of the informal focus group that persuaded Heather McPherson to post the mug as well! Certainly came up in the conversation.
On the bright side I am learning how to use my newly acquired spinning wheel. Plus I dug up some more of the lawn for vegetables. Just honing my Luddite skills for the upcoming AI onslaught. You never know what’ll come in handy these days!

  26. David,
We asked you to change the attribution of the tshirt photo of our very much REAL garment. Please do so.
