There being no Canadian version of the Logan Act, there’s little that could be done about Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s mortifying pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago to pose for a selfie with Donald Trump and, or so she claims, “engage in constructive dialogue and diplomacy with the incoming administration.”

Ms. Smith gazes fondly at a blathering Donald Trump in what looks like a cellphone shot of a reception line (Photo: X/Danielle Smith).

Her race to the tacky Florida resort to be photographed with the U.S. president-elect, who may or may not have known who he was talking to, is nothing more than Ms. Smith’s embarrassing tendency to drop everything no matter how important if there’s an opportunity to appear at the side of any far-right celebrity who lurches into view.

And what right-wing celebrity is more, well, celebrated right now than Mr. Trump?

Where a potential problem arises is the premier’s ex post facto claim that she engaged in diplomacy, which she is neither authorized by Ottawa nor trusted by vast numbers of Canadians inside and outside Alberta to do.

It is reasonable to assume that whatever Ms. Smith said, it was unlikely to be a “Team Canada” message and may well have been contrary to the interests of Canadian provinces other than those like Alberta with a lot of oil.

This kind of thing is the reason the idea of a Canadian version of the Logan Act, the 1799 law that makes it illegal for private American citizens to negotiate with foreign governments about disputes with the United States, arises from time to time. It remains on U.S. law books because unauthorized freelance diplomacy is still a temptation, especially in a globalized world.

But while many Albertans and other Canadians deeply distrust Ms. Smith’s motives and the potential consequences of the messages she may be passing on, it seems a little over the top to accuse her of treason, as many commenters were doing on social media yesterday. (For each such post, it must be noted, there is an equal and opposite tweet calling her a hero, and saying it’s all Justin Trudeau’s fault. Some of those ones even came from real people, rather than the usual Conservative bots.)

Former Alberta Progressive Conservative deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk struck a reasonable note on this issue when he noted that, “When premiers and provincial politicians travel abroad and meet with foreign elected officials, these trips must be cleared for Global Affairs Canada. Also, these trips, their goals and cost must be announced prior to departure.”

That was certainly not so in this case. In fact, the Alberta Government’s Jan. 10 public itinerary email sent to media stated that “Premier Danielle Smith is travelling out of the country on vacation with her family, beginning January 7 and returning January 17.” According to the itinerary, there were “no scheduled events” on Saturday and yesterday.

So her social media posts yesterday morning announcing she had met Mr. Trump “over the last 24 hours” strongly suggest that the itinerary was an intentional attempt to deceive, perhaps out of worry Global Affairs might ask her not to go.

As Mr. Lukaszuk asked in another tweet, “If on ‘private vacation’ you spend time with Kevin O’Leary, who needs government concessions to do business in Alberta, and with Trump, who wants to annex Canada, shouldn’t your meetings be documented and witnessed by #abgov officials?”

Of course, Ms. Smith is without shame, so it was probably inevitable she would sooner or later show up at the side of Mr. Trump, whose call for Canada to become the 51st state she has never criticized, whether or not he had any interest in talking to her. (It has been suggested he did not.)

Having done so, despite what her office had to say about her activities, she presumably couldn’t resist bragging about it, with photos, and trying to pretend there was more “diplomacy” going on than there probably really was. She is, after all, quite hopeless.

This translated into a claim, repeated on the official Government of Alberta website yesterday, that “we had a friendly and constructive conversation during which I emphasized the mutual importance of the U.S.-Canada energy relationship, and specifically how hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy exports from Alberta.”

“I was also able to have similar discussions with several key allies of the incoming administration and was encouraged to hear their support for a strong energy and security relationship with Canada,” that statement continued. “On behalf of Albertans, I will continue to engage in constructive dialogue and diplomacy with the incoming administration and elected federal and state officials from both parties and will do all I can to further Alberta’s and Canada’s interests.”

The message concludes with a half-hearted statement that Canada and the United States alike need to preserve their independence.

This makes it sound as if Ms. Smith is treating the excursion as official government business, which raises the question of who was paying the freight for her “family vacation.”

Other questions that might be asked on her return: How long was her conversation with Mr. Trump? What did he say? Who were the “key allies” she talked to?

All this said, Ms. Smith is not the only Canadian premier heading to the United States in hopes of staving off Mr. Trump’s threatened 25-per-cent tariffs on everything Canadian on Day 1 of his administration a week today. None of the others seem to have been accused of treason.

If nothing else, one hopes Ms. Smith had a chance to taste the famous Mar-a-Lago chocolate treat during her sojourn in Florida. Perhaps she will tell us what we’re all burning to know: Is it really as good as they say, or does it taste like … ?

  1. I could see this being less of an issue if
    1) Canadians and the federal gov’t were aware of her trip, instead of findng out about it on social media.
    2) it was w/ Kevin O’Leary, who has, very recently stated that the US should annex Canada.

    1. Because Thomas wants us to know ,why would Thomas be the voice of reason ?
      It’s true ,it’s all tacky,juvenile and classless
And the fashion statements, was there a memo ?To wear white
I remember attending a function where they ,the political elites told us what to wear ,and sure enough like a herd of cattle ,minus myself ,hundreds came in the chosen attire, the first reminder of cults
Hopefully the First Lady s fashion choice is ,as I believe filled with classy

      1. Melania Trump? Canada doesn’t have a First Lady. but if we did, I think it would be Governor-General Mary Simon.

This installment in Alberta history should be called “The Bobbsey Twins go to Florida”. Dress-alikes, how cute is that?

Thomas Lukaszuk knows a few things. It’s fair enough not to agree with him.

      2. Danielle Smith is a traitor to Canada. We all know we’ll without any independent verification from an Alberta or Canadian government official on the trip, she says one thing to the cameras, something totally opposite to trump/olarey away from the camerad. Expect her to be a spy for trump and to import Maga to Canada.

  2. Smith seems to have developed an uncanny knack for taking vacations in the US that happen to coincide with meeting US conservative politicians, this is not the first time she’s used this ruse. Maybe this is in part to get around getting approval from the Feds for her attempts at unauthorized diplomacy. But I suspect it is also a way to get Alberta taxpayers to pay for part or all of her vacations and make them seem like work.

Of course a problem from the Federal perspective is Smith’s only concern seems to be not having tariffs on oil and gas, on autos or fish not really. But who knows if she really even spoke to Trump at any length or he just obligingly gave her a quick photo op. Perhaps confusingly after had to ask his aides who is she? And maybe they weren’t sure either.

Smith may be developing a Mary Walsh ability to show up and unexpectedly ambush Federal politicians, although of the US kind. But that does not mean she actually accomplished anything here.

    1. Excellent Dave! Smith as Mary Walsh, not quite Xena (played by Melania) with her lesbian sidekick. Of course, that show has morphed into My Life is Murder, a refrain sung by millions of Albertans who query Danielle’s motives.

  3. Like Trump, Danielle Smith likes to feel important. And have someone take photos of her feeling important.
Unauthorized diplomacy. I can hear her again say “ I thought I could do that, nobody told me” can’t you?? How many times can she use that dumb line!?

  4. It’s a good thing FDR didn’t know about the Logan Act or we wouldn’t have had people like Harry Hopkins helping to ensure we won WW2.

  5. Marlaina is only good at two things:
    1. Lying
    2. Getting Albertans to pay for her vacations.
Her joy at being photographed with two of the biggest clowns on Earth is cringe.

  6. You wrote that some thought her a “hero”.
Surely that was meant to say a “zero”. Autocorrect, waddya gonna do eh?

    1. Danielle Smith is making a big fool out of herself, and she will not care about the consequences of her actions.

  7. Looks like Smith decided she did not want to wait in line to kiss the orange haired President in waiting’s ass. I can imagine that Premier Ford is not very happy as this stunt and Smith’s attitude could and probably will seriously undermine a proper Canadian response to Trump’s tariff threats.

  8. I think the reason Smith is being called a traitor is because none of the others have such a large base screaming about not wanting to be part of Canada. Also, the farmers and other industries in Alberta that keep folks employed should be asking why she only shills for gas and oil.

  9. I just heard a CBC interview with political scientist Lisa Young. Dr. Young said it was her understanding that Kevin O’Leary has been an on-going guest of Donald Trump at Key Mar-a-Lago, and it was Mr. O’Leary who actually invited Danielle Smith to the resort. This gives credibility to (commenter) Dave’s suggestion that Trump had to be told who it was he was meeting.

Dr. Young also raised the question of what objective Danielle Smith was pursuing when she lobbied the president elect; was she lobbying against a 25% tariff in general, or was she lobbying for a carve out for oil and gas?

In the CBC story (linked below), Canadian Foreign Affairs minister Melanie Joly has apparently not ruled out restricting energy exports to the US in retaliation to the 25% tariffs that appear to be coming. Personally I think would be fair game, and I suspect would have the support of most of Canada. Ms. Smith, of course, went apoplectic at the suggestion.

As long as the Liberals are in power, restricting exports is an easy choice to make, politically. What I am wondering about, is what would a Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre do about the issue? Does he support his Alberta base and lift the restrictions the Liberals put in place before the election, or leave the restrictions in place to curry favour with his new supporters in Central Canada that gave him the Prime Ministership? It would make a delightful election issue.

I have felt for some time that Danielle Smith will be a real nightmare for Pierre Poilievre, as we have already seen on the pension issue.

Finally, also in the CBC story below, Danielle Smith suggested that the tariffs are probably coming, in spite of her best efforts. She also said the US trade deficit is Donald Trump’s biggest irritant. If that is the case, is there much point to the $29 million she has allocated to enhance border security? That 29 mill could be put to better use elsewhere.

      1. Absolutely the question. Smith and OLeary seem to be comfortable hanging out with a convicted felon.

  10. “Smith gazes fondly at a blathering…” You might have added ‘adoringly’ or ‘rapturously’. Perhaps it was also with blinking eyes, much like an overage grade six girl who has been caught passing notes in a School Board meeting.

  11. The word I of thinking of is ‘disillusioning’. Are people like Danielle Smith the best Alberta or Canada can offer its people for governance? Is someone like Kevin O’Leary really in-touch with Canadians? Are Canadians more like Americans than we think? What does it truly mean to be Canadian? From my perspective Danielle Smith and Kevin O’Leary fall far short of any ideal Canadian.

  12. Mr. Wonderful keeps wandering in and out of my story. Where’s the other Dragon Den man,Brett Wilson? When’s he showing up?

  13. I recently asked Alberta MLA Jennifer Johnson a similar question when she posted on Facebook about her trip to “AmFest” to see Donald Trump speak and in her words “meet with our American friends, to share our success stories and look forward to a bright future with our number one trading partners.” She quickly responded that the trip was done on her “personal” time at her “personal” expense. I then questioned why she was engaging in government business while on personal time… she didn’t respond.

  14. Surely some early morning pillow talk from a Florida hotel bed will appease the people calling her all sorts of names, including, but not limited to “traitor”. Who can resist a sleepyhead?

It’s not this trip alone that has stirred up ill will. It’s her earlier chats online about setting up some sort of free zone with Ron DeSantis, flying chartered planes into Canada with people appointed as diplomats by Danielle Smith, and now setting up a border patrol with Alberta sheriffs and drones, enabling StarLink satellite service along the border and who knows what other technology at her fingertips, ready to click “buy”. Rushing to Florida to cozy up to the guy who said he’ll use economic force to annex us, after he said it? Is the border for him and his military, or for the protection of Canada from people like him? The pillow talk is not reassuring.

It’s Monday. Education workers are going on strike after being offered a paltry raise that won’t even buy gruel. Danielle Smith jetted off for some celebrity worship, international trade talks or a family holiday (you pick) with the next U.S. president after he threatened us. People who need orthopedic surgeries will have to wait even longer. Smith needs that cash to party with billionaires.

She’s on holidays until after the Wednesday meeting of first ministers’ with PM Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly. Is she coming back to Canada before she heads to the inauguration in Washington?

No one can make everyone angry at the same time like Danielle Smith. I wouldn’t be sitting in bed batting my heavily-lined eyelids if I were her. I’d brush my hair, pull up my big girl pants and get on a plane to Ottawa. If a few names on Twitter upset her, oh well. She talks tough. She can take what she dishes out. Or can she?

    Arrogance comes before a fall.

    1. “Surely some early morning pillow talk from a Florida hotel bed will appease the people calling her all sorts of names, including, but not limited to “traitor”. Who can resist a sleepyhead?”

At ABs… I thought I was imagining things, when I first saw her video, and even said out loud, “JC, she could have at least pulled a comb through her hair.” Glad I’m not the only one who thought she was abed for that self-serving “interview.”

  15. Don’t forget Tucker Carlson a very close confident and advisor to Trump made a special side trip to Alberta to meet Premier Smith on his to conduct the famous obsequious interview with Putin. What do you think they discussed? Trump’s future plans?

    1. Robert: I did see it, and read as much as I could stand. I frankly do not believe his claim that Mr. Trump wanted to speak with her. Others say Kevin O’Leary had to set up the two patio photos, in neither of which Mr. Trump is looking at Ms. Smith, and rest look as if they were take of a reception line with the once and future president talking over her shoulder with someone else while he shook her hand. DJC

    2. Rick Bell’s journalism is 180 degrees from horse’s mouth. But it is probable good for plant growth.

  16. Here’s another thing that bothers me. The Alberta Government dated Smith’s public itinerary January 10 for a family vacation that started on January 7. Is it normal for the premier to disappear for a few days before anyone knows?

Please note that January 7 was the day Donald Trump threatened Canada with annexation, Greenland with a (forced?) purchase and seizure of the Panama Canal.

It is entirely possible that Danielle Smith was already waiting in Mar-a-Lago when Trump announced these plans. Did he give her advance notice, so she could book flights for herself and her family? Has anyone seen her family on this now very public trip?

No scheduled events? She might have been wandering the streets looking for a place to eat, as one does, and happened upon the resort. Now she says she was invited as the guest of Kevin O’Leary. This trip and the meetings no longer appear to be a random acts of tourism.

If she knew in advance about the plan to annex Canada, any loyal premier would phone the prime minister. He might even take her call.

See where this is going? Danielle Smith can never keep her story straight.

If she can change her travel plans for pleasure, surely she can return to do her premiering job before January 17. January 15; be there, be square, straighten up and fly right.

    1. Abs: Disappearing premiers are not a completely new phenomenon in Alberta. There was William Aberhart, who disappeared in British Columbia and never reappeared in Alberta. He is still in B.C., as a matter of fact. And there was Jason Kenney who disappeared for a week, or was it two weeks, during COVID. To this day nobody knows where he went, although there were plenty of entertaining rumours. As it turned out, one was a dead man and the other was a politically dead man walking. DJC

    2. Maybe she was interviewing for the “Panama Govenor” job when it becomes a US State, for when she retires and moves down there pemanently?

  17. If you look closely at the photos that were released, Trump was still wearing his bloody golf shoes. I HIGHLY doubt Mar-A-Lago is the kind of place where they allow spikes in the clubhouse. She didn’t have a meeting with Trump, Kevin OLeary managed to get her in front of Donny for a photo ; and that’s it. No one would wear spikes to an actual meeting, least of all someone as vain as DJT.

  18. It appears Jordan Peterson was also there so it seems to be some sort of round table of the least popular people in Canada doing their best sycophantic dance. I guess W. Brett Wilson was busy.

  19. It is the joyous celebration and further normalization of all things decadent: “A process, condition, or period of deterioration or decline, as in morals or art; decay. The state of being degenerate in mental or moral qualities.”

As noted, “Ms. Smith is without shame”, so one wonders if the serial sexual predator/mushroom head grabbed her ‘attention’ while she was enthusiastically performing her part as groveling groupie and ‘taking one’ for Team Canada?

It might also be noted that seeking advice from the ‘master’ regarding the proper administration of worldly business affairs is always a worthwhile pursuit for self interested acolytes intent on the sought after pecuniary enrichment resulting from successfully replicating/imitating/implementing the master’s archetype.

    For example,

    https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/trump-admits-misusing-charity-funds-settles-lawsuit-against-trump-foundation-that-he-said-he-wouldnt-settle/

  20. The story is that getting any proximity to Trump requires that a fee be paid. Right now, the popular going rate is $ 1 million for his Inauguration fund. If Queen Danielle that kind of money and got nothing for it, she has a lot of explaining to do.

Btw, it looks like pronouncements of treason will be applied to Smith.

  21. I had no idea Kevin O’Leary was so physically tiny. No wonder he always talks so loud. He reminds me of oh so many vertically challenged people I have witnessed in drinking establishments.

  22. WE got a new Stormy Daniels!
    Stormy Danielle
    Same players , same roles?
    Same result?
I love it when life makes it all so very obvios and everybody important misses it.
Our Stormy Danielle has been looking a little abused in her reporting of Florida events. That spurned , pouty, used look and with warnings for us all he is just going to abuse us all soon.
Will she ever tell us if it really is in the shape of a mushroom? The coming cloud I mean . I’ll show myself out now.

  23. Trump is beyomnd Appeasement,if you appease trump he will only continue to want more, you can only stand up to Trump and negotiate the deal.Strap on some balls and stand up to Trump.

  24. It is quite clear that Smith feels like some kind of enslaved hero (Queen Boudica) battling against Laurentian elites. Hanging out with Trump, O’Leary and before Tucker Carlson places her in some pretty odd company (to be generous) while undermining Canada. She is being used for their own agendas but seems to like it. I wonder how Poilievre will navigate this populist minefield he has exploited without giving away the country and succumbing to Queen Boudica of AB.

  25. it is well known that Kevin O’Leary is a huckster of the lowest class, making his millions off the backs of hardworking people.
Does he have his sites set on the Alberta Heritage Trust Fund with Smith writing a blank cheque?
Smith is so pointedly not a Canadian. She is in this for her own glory.
As she even turns against her own (see East Slopes) supporters.
Be careful what you wish for Alberta, the radical right wing is bad for your health.
Time for the Conservatives to remove themselves from these wacko’s.
