Being told you have three weeks to comply with the law after being found in civil contempt is not what most of us would call a ringing victory, but you have to give Take Back Alberta founder (or whatever he is) David Parker credit for seeing the bright side of life

Having been told by a Court of King’s Bench justice yesterday he has until Aug. 19 to hand over documents showing the activities of the registered third-party political advertiser to the provincial elections regulator or face a $5,000 fine and possible arrest, Mr. Parker took to social media to portray this as a stunning smackdown of Elections Alberta.

“Unelected bureaucrats at Elections Alberta have just been humiliated by a provincial court after baselessly trying to imprison me,” Mr. Parker, who was not in the courtroom, posted on social media.

“On Saturday, I learned that Elections Alberta was seeking an arrest warrant because I’ve refused to hand over private donor information which I believe to be irrelevant to EA’s mandate,” he went on. “A provincial judge smacked down EA’s undemocratic request.”

“Despite this witch hunt by unelected bureaucrats, the rule of law was upheld today,” he added. “Some of my faith in our broken society has been restored.”

OK, if you say so.

Realistically, it seems more likely Elections Alberta is quite satisfied with the short time Mr. Justice Jonathan Martin gave Mr. Parker to comply with the law and produce the documentation it’s seeking, which Mr. Parker complains includes the identities of donors to TBA who fear they could be harassed by “woke” activists.

Elections Alberta started its investigation last fall to establish whether TBA has complied with the law, including properly recording its income, its sources and advertising purchases, that it’s been using the money raised for political advertising, keeping proper records, and ensuring that donors were legally eligible to make contributions.

Documents sought by Elections Alberta include records of funds raised at TBA’s 2022 annual general meeting, invoices for expenses at town hall meetings organized by the group throughout small-town Alberta, receipts for advertising, and records related to a TBA dog-and-pony show that featured Jordan Peterson, inspiration to a generation of Canadian incels.

Readers need to remember that Take Back Alberta is both a third-party advertiser, which has legal obligations under the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act, and a less clearly defined far-right faction within the governing United Conservative Party. In the latter role, it controls seats on the party’s governing board and has elected supporters in many riding associations.

Mr. Parker, long the bad boy of the Alberta conservative movement, has prominently opposed trans rights, COVID vaccine requirements, and other MAGA causes célèbre in often offensive and insulting social media posts. He has also been given credit by media for organizing the campaign to oust former Premier Jason Kenney over his government’s COVID-19 policies, and last year ran training sessions for “scrutineers” to infiltrate campaigns and “ensure the integrity of Alberta’s elections.”

Last year, he also talked about setting up branches in other provinces – Take Back Wherever, one supposes – and targeting school board elections across Canada to elect social conservative activists opposed to gay rights and other hobgoblins of MAGA minds.

But it has been evident for months that all is not well within TBA – which may have been a factor in Elections Alberta’s current investigation. Press Progress, which has been the go-to source for reporting on TBA and Mr. Parker’s antics, reported last year he had lost control of the group’s Telegram channel as a result of the dispute.

Former TBA Chief Financial Officer Marco van Huigenbos – a former Fort Macleod town councillor who faces sentencing in September for his role in the Coutts blockade – has been co-operating with the Elections Alberta probe, Press Progress also reported.

Hints of the level of discord could be found on social media yesterday.

Mr. Parker has frequently been described in media, including here, as the founder and former executive director of TBA, information that came from Mr. Parker himself.

However, yesterday his lawyer, Leighton Grey, told The Edmonton Journal that Mr. Parker is not TBA’s founder and that the position of executive director does not exist within the organization. Some of the documents Elections Alberta wants therefore may not be his to hand over, the lawyer suggested.

Mr. Parker has also been widely understood to be a personal friend and influential ally of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith – who was a guest at his wedding – and even a puppet-master who pulls the strings of the UCP.

But if that were ever true, the current contretemps seems to suggest that Mr. Parker’s influence with the government is waning rapidly.

He has become a frequent embarrassment to Ms. Smith. If push came to shove between Mr. Parker, the self-described black belt in organizing, and UCP MLAs, who mostly like working with the premier, it seems unlikely he could organize a repeat of the ouster of Mr. Kenney.

For his part, Mr. Parker ended his social media communique with a plea for readers to “pray for wisdom in these next steps.” Whose wisdom was not immediately apparent.

  1. I think David Parker is about to get his butt whopped. It’s long overdue. All mouth and no brains. Elections Alberta is there to help protect our democracy, and so are the courts, no matter how much Danielle Smith, the UCP, and Take Back Alberta want to try and suppress it. Hopefully, Danielle Smith and the UCP are next to go. That’s likely to happen, because of all the missteps that Danielle Smith is doing.

  2. And I used to think that d’rump had the monopoly on creative distractions…..there’s so much going on with Princess Marlaina/UCP/TBA, that my sister suggested that they should rename as the “Hippo” party….

David Parker/ TBA stealing the spotlight, again— for someone who makes such an issue of the
‘unelected staff’ of elections alberta officials, you’d think after all his yrs in government circles in Canada, that that is how things work. And since he has never been elected to any government position, why does he think he has special powers?

What Alberta really, really, needs right now is an “exorcist”. This head spinning is getting totally out of control, and the government is on a summer break right now. Which I just realized was the AFF’s premise of …

  4. Cult leaders like Parker whine that their supporters will be harassed because that’s what Parker orders his cult members to do to THEIR perceived “enemies”. Alt rights think everyone behaves like they do.

  5. Back in my RPC days (daze) there was an oft heard term that proved to be the maxim for any outcome: when in doubt, claim victory.

It’s something that had its origins in US CON circles and was used to great effect, by the likes of Lee Atwater and Roger Stone. It’s just another method of gaslighting, based in the belief in that weird practise called the ‘power of positive thinking’. The positive thinking part comes into play where Parker expects Queen Danielle to intervene to save her hide and his.

    1. Just: The NDP version is, “When in doubt, claim a moral victory.” DJC

      1. You’re forgetting that the UCP version is
        – Nothing happened, and
        – If something happened, then the NDP did it or made us do it.

  6. I think a more important question here is, which donor names is he protecting so fiercely? What is he hiding?

  7. Another plot twist! Who is the founder? Who is running this sinking ship aground, if not its supposed commandant? Only the shadow knows.

  8. Deflect, deny and delay. All tried and sometimes successful strategies Donald Trump and his corrupt acolytes have used in the US to disguise their criminality. I hope it doesn’t work here, but I wonder if the Canadian justice system is sophisticated enough to understand what is upon them.

David Parker has always reminded me of the Alberta version of a man named Steve Bannon. Bannon was a senior advisor to Trump during Trump’s term as president.
He is a very intelligent man, educated, former Goldman Sachs money guy that became some sort of weird political warrior, burn it all down and restart society with only the men (him, of course) in charge of everything.

Bannon is a hero to egomaniacs everywhere. He has a podcast called “The War Room” that is apparently a calling card to incels.

Bannon is currently serving a short stint in a US Federal prison for a contempt of congress conviction related to his refusal to testify about his knowledge of the events and organization leading up to the deadly and violent January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Washington DC Capitol Building.

Bannon’s pal, Guo Wengui (AKA Miles Kwok), a self exiled Chinese billionaire, was recently convicted in US Federal court of a multibillion dollar fraud scheme that fleeced his many followers. Bannon was arrested a few years ago on Wengui’s yacht off the east coast.

Upon his release from Federal prison, Bannon will face a fraud trial of his own in New York state in December, 2024 stemming from his alleged fleecing of his followers relating to a phony wall building scheme on the US Mexico border. Bannon’s co-conspirators have already been convicted.

I’ve been following this for many years because public corruption bugs me. It’s dangerous and bad for society and the similarities I see in Bannon and Parker are many. Idealistic, power hungry men who basically hate women or believe they are superior believe they can reshape their country (or province) into their version of some sort of backwards thinking utopia. But this requires money, lots of it. It requires capturing the greedy, ambitious unethical politicians to enact the laws they want, to control the people they consider inferior to them.

But what do the billionaires get for their money? A reversal of laws and regulations designed to protect consumers, protect the environment, protect healthcare and public education thereby making the billionaires even more money.

I’m looking forward to seeing the David Parker donor list and I suspect that list may contain names of people ineligible to contribute to an Alberta third party advertiser. But I wonder if Alberta and its legal system has the capability or if the elections laws in Alberta even have the necessary teeth to force this disclosure. I hope I’m proven wrong.

As for Marco van Huiganbos, the convicted criminal awaiting sentencing, I hope he realizes he’s been played like a fiddle. While people like him, the Freedom Convoy people and the other misfits who want to impose their weird pseudo Christian conservative “values” on the rest of Albertans, it’s about the money and the power.
The socially conservative suckers are just the means to an end.

    1. “I am looking forward to seeing the David Parker donor list…”

I agree. David Parker is making it more interesting every time he resists releasing it.

  9. It’s actually quite funny that, when faced with a little legal adversity, ol’ Davey Boy suddenly isn’t the founder/stable genius behind TBA anymore. Who’s in charge? Who knows! Comedic gold, I tell you. That said, the whole think reeks of a political coverup. I’ve been saying for quite a while now follow the money and you’ll find out who controls the puppet master. Unfortunately I think Parker will fall on his sword before he publicly reveals the money men behind TBA. And rest assured that if TBA were to fold it would simply spring up as another “grassroots” organization, well funded by the exact same dark Canadian and American money.

  10. “However, yesterday his lawyer, Leighton Grey, told The Edmonton Journal that Mr. Parker is not TBA’s founder and that the position of executive director does not exist within the organization. Some of the documents Elections Alberta wants therefore may not be his to hand over, the lawyer suggested.”

Is the lawyer related to Foghorn Leghorn?

“Lookit here son, I say son, did ya see that hawk after those hens? He scared ’em! That Rhode Island Red turned white. Then blue. Rhode Island. Red, white, and blue. That’s a joke, son. A flag waver. You’re built too low. The fast ones go over your head. Ya got a hole in your glove. I keep pitchin’ ’em and you keep missin’ ’em. Ya gotta keep your eye on the ball. Eye. Ball. I almost had a gag, son. Joke, that is.”

Meanwhile, back to reality as such . . .

. . . The old martyr David Parker (“His crusade was a search for God and they say it’s been a long way to carry on”) and the memory hole that is attached to him is going to have to go into overdrive in order to ensure all of the publicly available records regarding his particular unsophisticated juvenile clown show are properly sanitized and/or redacted. Where it is assumed a semblance of rationality prevails. That may be assuming the impossible considering what we are dealing with, see Point 5 below.

    1. “Despite claims from Parker that “anyone is welcome to come,” CTV News was denied entrance into two Wednesday night meetings.”

    2. “Who We Are”

    4. Next . . .

. . . “Dedication to the truth cannot be the lawyer’s paramount goal when every attorney is equally compelled to keep the truth hidden, at least if it is in the client’s interest and there is no basis to avoid the protection afforded client communications.”

“It can be argued that the notion of the trial as a “search for the truth” is incompatible with the adversarial system. After all, the adversarial system – except possibly as governed by the ethical commands prosecutors face to “seek justice” – is one based upon zealous representation and the desire of each side to advantage its position.”

    5. Finally . . . “Mental health problems do not affect three or four out of every five persons, but one out of one.” (as on a continuum and always considering the uniqueness of interindividual variability) With age, the wisdom of some insight, and the outlook of some experience the reality of that simple quote appears all too real; where, it seems that the institution, or the asylum and its inhabitants is simply the larger everyday social order that a severely deluded and delusional primate has created for itself on this absurd mudball.

  11. Perhaps what Mr. Parker should be praying for is good record keeping. Although at this point it might be a bit late for that. I could be wrong, but he does not seem like the most meticulous person to me, but perhaps he is more careful with paperwork than in his remarks.

Also it is not a good sign to be given deadlines by a judge, as continued stalling or non compliance may have serious consequences. Perhaps Mr. Parker is already preparing to go into what I would call martyr mode. This sometimes seems to be the response of some of those on the religious right.who are used to being revered by their followers so do not expect to ever be held accountable.

I suppose in 21 days or so we will know how this all turns out and if Smith will have another digraced person she will have to carefully try distance herself from. Perhaps she has learned her lesson from past encounters with pastors with recording devices and will not be taking any calls from Parker in the near future.

    1. Dave: Personally, I think Danielle Smith hasn’t got much time left as premier of Alberta. The UCP ship is full of holes, and she will jump ship.

      1. Anonymous: Well, nothing is impossible, especially in the midst of the current gong show. DJC

        1. David Climenhaga: The UCP are another political merger attempt in Alberta that is going to bite the dust. There were too many problems with it from the start. It’s going to collapse. What will they reinvent themselves as, I don’t really know?
